About the program
Did you know? In 2022, smoking was the third leading cause of fires in Oregon. On average, 20 people in Oregon die each year because of a fire caused by things like cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco. These fires are easily preventable.
The OSFM's Smoking Material Prevention Program is designed to increase Oregonians' awareness of the risks associated with fires caused by smoking behaviors and reduce occurrence through shared data analysis, best practice education, collaboration, and resource support.

Populations most at risk
The risk of injury or death from smoking-related fires is not equal across Oregon's populations. The risk increases for Oregon's vulnerable communities of youth, older adults, people with disabilities, people using medical oxygen, people in a low socioeconomic status, and people experiencing homelessness.
